Cool cabins among the trees
All to yourself
Mountains are tall
People enjoying themselves
In
a village on a roof I can see lots of animals.
I
see people playing games and enjoying themselves.
I
will see you next time world
Monsters
One
little monster with very big jaws.
Another
big monster with lots of sharp claws.
Mountains
are beautiful and big
Our
land has mountains too
Up there so high in the sky
Nearly
touches the clouds
Tall
and grand and a rocky surface
Across
the mountains is a view you will see
Incredible
birds take flight
Nowhere
will you see mountains as beautiful as me
Somewhere
up there the sun shines.
Once
upon a time there was a beautiful garden with the most beautiful plants. The
girl who lived there had a secret to making her plants grow, a magic flag that
she put in the garden. One day her
neighbour, Mr Mergreger, took the flag in a storm of bitter jealousy. The next day the little girl who lived there
was shocked. Her neighbour had left her a ransom note her first child would be
his. One year latter she had a baby and
she forgot he was so angry. He took her
baby. Her husband and he had a fight,
but the baby was restored and they lived happily ever after.
The
end
One
day two boys went gardening.
There were
lots of flowers. One of the flowers was
hairy and some were curly.
After
gardening they went inside to eat.
Lastly they went to bed and lived happily ever after.
Stripes
Different
kinds of stripes. Stripes on
animals. Stripes on birds and stripes on
clothes.
One
dark and mysterious night I stumbled on a box.
Inside was nothing.
There
are some butterflies in the sky and an island and the flower petals are flowing
in the air from the middle of the island.
There
once was a boy
Who
got great joy
Of
jumping up and down
More
than that he hoped he would not drown in the muddy puddles.
Where
lions are where Africa is.
This poem is
where about where Africa is.
You speak
Arabic is it?
I know there’s war you
know.
Something that I don’t know is
what you know.
And where’s your home?
Well I don’t need to know.

Words and pictures
This post features drawings by Eritrean refugee children from Aaidun and Nidal Elementary in Kassala, South East Sudan, with accompanying stories written by children of Flemington Primary School, Melbourne Australia.
The aim of this project is to stimulate links between students from the schools, and through the sharing of the pictures and stories to develop a deeper understanding of each other’s culture, beliefs and living conditions.
The project has grown out of the gift of art work produced by Eritrean refugee children in Aaidun and Nidal Elementary and brought to Melbourne by Mr Anwar Alishek from the Eritrean Australian Humanitarian Aid (EAHA), a Melbourne Rotarian supporting Eritrean refugees in Sudan.
Some of the drawings and accompanying stories were exhibited at Gallery Sunshine Everywhere in 2015. http://www.gallerysunshine.com/2015_Exhibitions/Pages/14_Jun_2015.html#grid
This is a joint project of Gallery Sunshine Everywhere, College of Education, Victoria University and the Eritrean Australian Humanitarian Association, facilitated by Sarah Tartakover, Maureen Ryan and Anwar Alishek.
This project was supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and will continue into 2016 with support from Brimbank City Council.
